Top-selling Audi A4 and Q5 models earn Insurance Institute TOP SAFETY PICK rating

Audi of America, Inc. announced that the Q5 and A4 models earned 2010 TOP SAFETY PICK ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The two best-selling Audi models join the Audi A3 in achieving the highest safety recognition granted by the influential IIHS. Today’s news means Audi offers more vehicles with the TOP SAFETY PICK rating than any German luxury automaker.

For the 2010 model year and beyond, IIHS included a new rollover roof strength test. To earn TOP SAFETY PICK recognition, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good for roof strength in rollover crashes. To measure roof strength, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed (pictured above). The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. This is a good assessment of vehicle structural protection in rollover crashes.

TOP SAFETY PICK also recognizes the vehicles that earn the highest rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on all of these models. A vehicle earning a good rating can withstand a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle’s weight. Current federal standards require a vehicle’s roof to withstand 1.5 times total weight. Click on the link or images below to view a brief clip from the testing.

None of the three Audi models with the TOP SAFETY PICK rating required any structural changes to meet the rollover testing criteria. The A3 has been on sale in the U.S. since Spring 2005 and received interior and exterior trim updates in Fall 2008. Its year-to-date sales are up over 100% due to the introduction of a TDI clean diesel variant in November 2009. The current A4 was completely redesigned with a U.S. market introduction in fall 2008, whose sporty upgrade variant, the S4, has yet to lose a comparison test. The Q5 went on sale in the U.S. in February 2009, quickly becoming one of the most successful nameplates in the Audi global product portfolio.

2012 Audi A3 Rendered

The next Audi A3 will once again leapfrog the Golf.

BY JENS MEINERS, ILLUSTRATION BY CHRISTIAN SCHULTE
June 2010

We like the current Audi A3; it’s sporty, compact, and stylish. But its fiercest competitor is a close relative, the VW Golf, a car that makes it hard to justify the big price of the little Audi. Since the debut of the current, sixth-generation Golf—essentially a highly successful face lift of the Golf MkV, a.k.a. Rabbit—the A3 looks somewhat dated. The current A3, after all, was launched seven years ago, just like the Golf V. A few minor freshenings have kept the Audi ahead of the now-gone Golf V in terms of style, but the Golf VI is so well executed that Audi needs a new car to keep up.

The next A3, to be launched in 2012, will make a leap forward. It is based on VW’s new “Modularer Querbaukasten” (MQB) architecture, meaning “modular transverse matrix.” As the name suggests, it’s the Volkswagen Group’s new modular transverse-engine platform, which is slightly longer and wider than the current A3 platform and designed to take further cost out of the many variations offered by Volkswagen and its Audi, SEAT, and Škoda subsidiaries.

Audi will continue to offer the A3 with front-wheel drive and Quattro all-wheel drive. Power will come from a number of direct-injection, turbocharged engines out of the VW Group’s vast parts bin. Europe will even get a tiny, entry-level, turbocharged 1.2-liter gasoline engine; there will also be more-powerful 1.4-liter and 2.0-liter TSI engines, as well as several TDI oil-burners. The overly complex turbo- and supercharged 1.4-liter twincharger engine of Euro Golf fame is unlikely to be offered in the A3; on the other hand, we believe that the A3 lineup will be topped by an RS3, powered by the phenomenal 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline-five which makes 340 hp in the TT RS. Even the current A3 could still get an RS3 version, giving it a final and honorable send-off.

Before the new, MQB-based RS3 arrives in 2014 or 2015, there will be an S3 model, powered by a version of the 2.0-liter EA888 engine making close to 300 hp. (Engine-code geeks will note that this engine replaces the current S3’s EA113 unit.) The most powerful A3 versions are likely to get dual-clutch (S tronic) transmissions as standard; a six-speed manual will be the standard box for the regular A3, with S tronic as an available option. Europe may still get entry-level versions with a five-speed manual. The smooth but thirsty 3.2-liter VR6, by the way, is history

The MQB platform allows for a number of alternative-technology powertrains. A compressed-natural-gas version is in the works, and Audi might also offer a plug-in hybrid. Even a fully electric A3 is possible, if demand warrants it.

Audi’s premium positioning means that a number of high-tech, luxury-segment gadgets will find their way into this compact car. Please join us in welcoming your favorite radar- and camera-based nannies, such as blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition (this one is likely for Europe only), and distance-keeping cruise control—just in case you’ve forgotten everything you learned in driver’s ed., and abandoned all common sense.

The A3 will get the latest iteration of the MMI control system, which directs a state-of-the-art navigation system with high-resolution map graphics, and a powerful stereo. Voice activation will allow you to keep your eyes on the road. We expect the A3 to be as luxurious as compact cars can possibly get, once again giving it a significant advantage over the Golf.

Body styles will again include the five-door “Sportback” that we’re used to over here as well as the slightly shorter three-door hatch and soft-top cabriolet that are offered in Europe. We love the current A3 cabriolet, which is more compact and more elegant than any of its competing folding-metal-top competitors, and we applaud Audi for choosing to stick with the cloth roof. The cabrio will be launched in late 2013, and while there are currently no plans to bring it or the three-door to the U.S., perhaps Audi will reconsider as premium customers go for smaller and more-efficient cars.

The styling of the next A3 will be an evolution of the current model’s, with LED light strips up front and a new grille that looks similar to the smaller A1’s. Competitors will include the BMW 1-series and the next-generation Mercedes-Benz A- and B-classes, the latter two of which will be finished with input from Renault and are unlikely to be offered in the U.S. Prospective buyers might also be cross-shopping the Lexus HS sedan and an upcoming compact Cadillac that is closer to the A4 in size but will be priced similar to the A3. Most important, the A3 gets a head start over the next Golf: the seventh generation of Wolfsburg’s best-seller will come at least one year later than the A3.

Audi designs a foosball table, redefines “fine motor skills”

We know what you’re thinking. I love me some foosball; if only the game were infused with a bit more… car. Well, Audi Design has answered your prayers, good friend.

The design was initially unveiled a couple of years ago, but is only now entering production, albeit limited: Only 20 examples of this soccer table are being produced by specialist firm Leonhart, each carrying a heft €12,900 (~$16k) price tag.

And yes, you could probably get yourself behind the wheel of a nice used A4 for that amount. But would that be as much fun? Well, probably. But for the fanatic who’s already got an R8 in the driveway, this very well might be the ultimate addition to the gaming room. Details – including endorsement from none other than the head of the Bavarian Table Soccer Association – in the press release after the jump.

New Volkswagen Polo GTI gets 33% more miles per gallon

The Volkswagen Polo piques our interest in every form it takes. A few days ago we told you about the Polo R and how much we wished VW would bring it stateside. And then there’s the deliciously efficient Polo TDI that gets somewhere between 62 and 74 miles per gallon, depending on who and when and where you ask. Obviously, we’d love to get our hands on one regardless. And wedged in between the knock-your-socks-off R and fatten-your-wallet TDI models is the Polo that wears the original hot hatch badge but still won’t hurt you at the pump: the Polo GTI.

Equipped with a 1.4-liter TSI engine and a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG), the 177-horsepower Polo GTI offers combined fuel consumption of 40 mpg U.S. (on the European cycle). The Polo GTI that preceded it carried VW’s staple-of-the-last-decade 1.8-liter turbo engine but only netted 30 mpg. The new Polo gets 33 percent more miles per gallon without sacrificing any of the fun that makes it a GTI – 0-60 is accomplished in 6.9 seconds and taking it to the far side of the speedo will have you cruising at a jail-worthy 142 miles per hour.

The GTI line has always been as much about crisp handling as straight-line zip. The Polo GTI is no exception. VW dropped the suspension a little over half an inch and equipped it with an electronic transverse differential lock (XDS) that reduces the dreaded understeer issue associated with all souped-up front-wheel-drive cars, making the knuckles a little less white when negotiating the twisties. At this point, Volkswagen, we’d take any Polo you want to send over. But you’ve teased us many times before so we won’t hold our breath.

Volkswagen Bik.e Electric Bike Revealed

Volkswagen has introduced a new folding electric bike for short range trips and commuting.  The Volkswagen Bik.e Electric Bike can travel up to 12.5 miles on a single charge at speeds of up to 12.5 mph, and can fold to fit in the standard spare tire hold of a car.

The first thing you might notice about the Volkswagen Bik.e Electric Bike is its lack of pedals or exposed gear mechanics.  Bik.e is a bike in shape and speed only, and closer to a scooter in functionality.  It is electronically limited to 12.5 mph to allow riding without a helmet, where laws in its native Germany are restrictive of higher speed riding.  A U.S. version may have a bit more pep, but likely at the sacrifice of range-per-charge, which in this case is set to 12.5 miles.

The Volkswagen Bik.e Electric Bike is more than a concept, as rumors suggest that Bik.e will see commercialized production in the near future.  While it could sell independently of Volkswagen’s traditional auto fleet, expect Bik.e to be paired with Volkswagen cars as an upgrade option.  It’s intended to be a driver’s sidearm, a readily available get-out-and-go option upon parking your VW.  It fits neatly into the spare tire compartment of your car and can be charged by your onboard DC outlet.

No word on release yet, but expect more news about the Volkswagen Bik.e Electric Bike in the near future.

Audi’s Mini-Fighter A1 Is Ready for Its Online Closeup

Does Justin Timberlake understand what “Vorsprung durch Technik” means?

Does he care?

Apparently. In a one-minute trailer that Audi has put online to tease the release of a promotional six-webisode action film series to be called “The Next Big Thing,” the singer/fashion designer pilots the recently announced premium Mini-Fighter A1, in between kisses dispensed to his co-star, Dania Ramirez.

But nowhere in the clip does Mr. Timberlake mention “progress through technology.” Perhaps he explains it in the next episode.

The car is not scheduled to come to the United States, but the trailer is ubiquitous on the Web. The first episode of the series officially began on Tuesday.

An Audi press release said the target group for the A1 “relies heavily on the Internet as its primary source of information. That is why we developed an online campaign. The film is shot in the style of the TV series ‘Lost’ or ‘24.’ ”

But to our eyes, Audi seems to be borrowing a page from the competition. BMW in 2001 released “The Hire,” a series of eight short films, each about 10 minutes, ostensibly starring Clive Owen as “the driver,” but it was various BMWs — a 7 series, a 5, an M3 — that stole the shows. The late John Frankenheimer, who directed “Grand Prix,” also made the first “Hire,” called “Ambush.” The series was issued as a set on DVD. The copies are out of print and fetch high prices on auction sites.  It’s estimated that the series has been viewed many millions of times.

In “Big Thing,” Mr. Timberlake plays John Frank, a run-of-the-mill information technician who’s attacked by two thugs while he’s sitting in a cafe. Luckily, he’s pulled to the floor by a strange woman seconds before the shots ring out, and the two escape in an A1. There’s a chase through Los Angeles, a secret mission is revealed and … well, you get the idea.

“Next Big Thing” is the marketing tagline for the A1, a hatchback coupe that was formally revealed in March at the Geneva show.  In Europe, the A1 goes on sale later this year, as a 2011 model. At the time it was shown, Audi said it had no plans to bring the car across the pond because of exchange rates between the euro and the dollar.

Audi has used film — and DVDs — for marketing purposes in the past. “Truth in 24,” about the carmaker’s adventures and success in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, was shown on ESPN, and a DVD version was later distributed to dealers and given to Audi customers. It can be downloaded at no cost on iTunes.

2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Event to Feature Passat Wagon E.R.V. Accessories Concept

Virginia International Raceway (VIR) — Volkswagen will show off its new Passat Wagon Emergency Response Vehicle Concept at the 2010 inaugural Jetta TDI Cup Double Header, the company announced today.

Developed for the Herndon, Va. Police Department, engineers and designers overhauled the Fun-to-Drive Passat Wagon to feature some serious upgrades.  Outside the E.R.V. Concept, a Hi-Def body styling package and spoilers create a stylish and imposing presence.  FMS Automotive and added painted accents combine to create a custom two-tone matte black-on-black paint work.

On the inside, custom components and calibration, APR LLC raised engine performance levels in this already potent 2.0L TSI four-cylinder engine, help back up the performance look on the outside.  The engine achieves a reported road-pounding 250 hp and 299 lbs. ft. of torque.  Also included in the package is an APR-engineered carbon-fiber cold air intake and automatic transmission.

Holding the E.R.V. Concept to the pavement, are Pirelli 235/40 R18 Pirelli High Performance All-Season tires mounted over Volkswagen’s own 18-inch Velos alloy wheels in custom matte black finish.  For added stopping power, the Passat Wagon E.R.V. Concept was upgraded with Passat 3.6L brake pads and 345 x 30 mm rotors.  H&R Special Springs LP helps ensure this Passat can handle its newfound performance and extra cargo with their built-to-order, Law Enforcement specification coil over suspension.

The interior was not neglected and features everything needed for Community Policing activities.  FMS Automotive magicians expertly created custom-built enclosures and mounts, to hold all the communications and emergency lighting gear in place.  Unless the lights and sirens are blaring, you would think this is just another Euro-tuned Passat Wagon, not the high-performance Community Service vehicle it really is.
